We’ve been staying in Wayfarer Inn, and two of its sister inns – Pacific Grove inn and Green Lantern also situated in Carmel. Out of these, Wayfarer gave an excellent hotel experience, with Pacific green offerings of Victorian house and the Green Lantern being slightly extra colorful B&B feel.
I’m a native of Carmel and after being away for some years, when I returned back, I had to face difficulty in locating this inn! Parking facility for hotel guests is available in the rear end and it remains filled. The office is in the front side of the building with its way through the beautiful courtyard, up a few stairs from the space meant for “check in parking”. Check in time is 3 PM and check outs at 11 AM.
They would require at least two night stay on the weekends with a facility of cancellation up to 72 hours in advance. If later than that, you will have to pay for the first night. There is a $10 processing fee for cancellation.
There is variation in the room rates with you getting some best prices from October to June. Prices are from the queen bed with the facility of full bath at $89, a king bed (two room suite) is available for $179. June to Sept prices tends to increase by $40 to $50 for a room, so you need to have a look at their website for any special offerings or any local event notices which could affect pricing. You’ve got sixteen rooms to choose the best one suitable to you, and as with all other inns – none of it is marked as #13!
We stayed in room number 11 located upstairs and had a queen bed, fireplace and complete bath. Many other rooms are equipped with full kitchens, refrigerators, gas stoves, etc for guests availing extended stays. The noise level is too low and the atmosphere is quiet and serene. The Carmel streets usually roll up at around 9:00 PM, so you may not hear much other than sound of occasional garbage trucks or street sweeper doing chores on some week days.
Of the three inns, this has the newest beds, in our experience. At the time of our stay the inn was being painted. The rooms are simple and good, and come equipped with lots of towels and hangers, apart from a small basket full of toiletries. A hair dryer has also been placed. All the three inns serve the same breakfast. You get the choice of muffins, faisin bread, hard boiled eggs, toast, cold cereals, fresh fruits and yogurts.
You can get hot chocolate, tea or coffee packets round the clock. A hearty “American” tea is served in the afternoons. You get popcorn packets along with selection movies for watching in the VCR’s in rooms.
The inn is strategically located in Carmel, quite close to the shopping areas. However you’ll have to trek a distance to reach the beach.
